Course Title: Introduction to Aerospace Flight

Course Attribute: Specialized Elective Course

Hours/credits: 40 hours/2 credits

Pre-courses: Advanced Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics

Purpose and Requirements:

Through the lectures, perceptual practice and model touching, the students can establish a preliminary understanding of the aerospace flight knowledge hierarchy. They can quickly understand the aerospace flight technology. At the same time, we hope to develop students' interest in aerospace flight through this course.

Course summary:

Chapter 1 Overview of Aerospace Flight Development (5 hours)

1-1 Introduction: Course description, very early developments. (1 hour)

1-2   The basic concepts of aerospace flight: the concept of aviation / aerospace / near space, the types of aircraft (aircraft, rocket, spacecraft), the status and role of aerospace flight.(1 hour)

1-3   Brief history of aviation development: an overview of the aviation development in the world and in China.(1.5 hours)

1-4   Brief history of astronautics development: an overview of the astronautics development in the world and in China.(1.5 hours)

Chapter 2 Principles of Aerospace Vehicles Flight (10 hours)

2-1   Geospace environment and solar/interplanetary space environment.(0.5 hours)

2-2 Basic concepts of gas flow: basic aerodynamics, including compressibility, viscosity, Bernoulli theorem, one-dimensional isentropic flow, Laval nozzle, shock wave, aerodynamic heating, etc.(2.5 hours)

2-3   Principle of aircraft flight: source of lift and wing theory, high lift devices, drag characteristics, lift-drag ratio and aerodynamic configuration.(2 hours)

2-4   Principles of high-speed and supersonic flight: wave drag, hypersonic flight and wave rider, integrated design and drag reduction, sound barrier and thermal barrier.(1 hour)

2-5   Principle of space flight: Kepler’s law, cosmic velocity, two-body problem, orbit of spacecraft and orbital maneuver, launch and return.(2 hours)

2-6   Principle of rocket propulsion: thrust formula, Tsiolkovsky formula, multistage rocket.(1 hour)

2-7   Principles of Stability and Control: flight vehicle performance, stability and maneuverability.(1 hour)

Chapter 3 Flight Propulsion Devices and Propulsion Principle (7 hours)

3-1   Classification and characteristics of engines.(0.5 hours)

3-2   Rocket engines: liquid rocket motor, solid rocket motor and hybrid rocket motor.(1.5 hours)

3-3 Airbreathing engines: piston engine, turbojet engine, turbofan engine, ramjet engine, etc.(2 hours)

3-4   New advanced engine: scramjet engine, detonation engines and hybrid propulsion engine (RBCC, TBCC, etc.).(2 hours)

3-5   Propulsion devices of deep space exploration: electric propulsion, nuclear propulsion and solar propulsion.(1 hour)

Chapter 4 Composition of Aircraft and its Function (7 hours)

4-1 The main components of an aircraft and its functions: fuselage, wing, tail wing, control surface, engine, landing gear, mechanical control system and airborne equipment.(1 hour)

4-2   The main components of rockets and its functions: the structure of launch vehicles and missiles.(1 hour)

4-3   Spacecraft structure: manned spacecraft, space shuttle, space probe, satellite and space station structure, life support systems.(2 hours)

4-4   Flight vehicle navigation and flight control system: aircraft navigation system (radio navigation, inertial navigation, satellite navigation, image matching navigation, celestial navigation, integrated navigation), aerospace measurement and control system, aircraft control system.(2 hours)

4-5   Ground facilities and safeguard systems: spaceflight launch sites, mobile launchers, airport.(1 hour)

Chapter 5 Aerospace Systems Engineering and Design (5 hours)

5-1 Introduction to Engineering: history and development of engineering, definition and category of aerospace engineering, ability and accomplishment of engineers.(0.5 hours)

5-2   Brief introduction to the philosophyof aerospace vehicle system engineering and design.(0.5 hours)

5-3   Test Facility and Technology:types and characteristics of wind tunnels.(2 hours)

5-4   The development trend of aerospace flight: high velocity, integration, stealth technology, and reusability.(1 hour)

Chapter 6 Manned space flight and deep space exploration: utilizing space, industrial, political, economic and international laws.(1 hour)

Extra class:

6-1   Review class: 2 hours.

6-2   Perceptual practice class: 2 hours, China Aviation Museum or Beijing Air and Space Museum.

Assessment methods:

Assignments 50%+ final examination 50%(closed-book)
