On the morning of October 24, a delegation of German young scholars from the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion visited the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). Lin Xiao, Vice President of UCAS, met with the delegation at the Yanqihu Campus. The delegation comprises 24 German young scholars from over 20 universities and research institutions across Germany, working in fields including physics, chemistry, biophysics, nanotechnology and life sciences. The delegation was accompanied by Fan Yingjie, Director-General of the Bureau of International Cooperation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Chinese Director of the Sino-German Center, and Ingrid Krüßmann, Head of Asia-Pacific and Special Advisor for China at the International Cooperation Division of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and German Director of the Sino-German Center, who also attended the meeting.
Lin Xiao welcomed the delegation and introduced UCAS's education model characterized by the integration of research and education, as well as its international development. He noted that UCAS attaches great importance to international academic exchange and research cooperation, and expressed the hope that exchanges and mutual visits of young scholars and students, together with joint research collaboration, would advance cooperation in education and research between UCAS and German universities and research institutions. He welcomed more German young scholars to visit UCAS for academic exchange.
Fan Yingjie noted that the German Young Scholars Visiting China Program established by the Sino-German Center aims to enhance the understanding of German young researchers of China's scientific and technological development and to build bridges for Sino-German research cooperation. He expressed the hope that the visit would enable the German young scholars to learn about UCAS and its research environment, laying a foundation for future exchange and cooperation.
Ingrid Krüßmann noted that the research fields of the delegation members are closely aligned with relevant strong disciplines at UCAS. She expressed the hope that the two sides would take the visit as an opportunity to further explore prospects for cooperation in young scholar exchange and joint research, and to promote exchanges between young scholars of the two countries.
During the meeting, colleagues from the School of Physical Sciences and the School of Chemical Sciences of UCAS introduced the disciplinary layout, research platforms and talent cultivation of the two schools. The two sides exchanged views on frontier directions in physics, chemistry and related interdisciplinary fields, as well as on topics of common interest including young scholar exchange and joint research, and expressed their willingness to further strengthen academic exchange and cooperation.
During the visit, the delegation toured the UCAS History Museum to learn about the University's development, its distinctive education model of the integration of research and education, and its achievements in talent cultivation. The delegation also visited laboratories of the School of Chemical Sciences, the Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Laboratory and the Neutrino Detector Laboratory, where they held discussions with faculty members and students.
Representatives from the Bureau of International Cooperation of the NSFC and the Sino-German Center, together with colleagues from the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Chemical Sciences, the Office of Research Affairs and the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of UCAS, attended the meeting.
